MOVIE REVIEW: Pirates of the Carribean 2 = Star Wars 2: The Empire Strikes Back

Pirates was way cool! Fantastic sequel, completely unlike Legend of Zorro (omg), but very similar to Empire Strikes Back!

The story was good, although a little convoluted and has been written to incorporate elements of the third film. The performances were as good as the first with the notable introduction of Bill Nighy as Davey Jones - who looks SPEC-TAC-ULAR! Production values were as high as you would expect, graphics top notch, and some of the actions sequences absoulutely imaginative! No 1000 Agent Smith fights here, or the pointless slogfest that charachterised the 2 later Matrix installments. I especially enjoyed that Kiera Knightlys charachter was used effectively and not a useless hanger-on like Catherine Zeta-Jones in Legend.

The Pirates Strike Back? *spoiler*
Expect the introduction of a long lost father figure whose story will be revolved in Part 3, an ambiguous romantic triangle to emerge with a single kiss, and the loss of a hero whose retrieval you will need to wait for in Return of the Pirate!

Paintball is fun/painful

Paintball was fun. It got rained out last week/the jerk at paintball wouldn't let us play, so it was postponed till this Saturday. It rocked. I haven't lost my touch.

Still, odds were slightly in my favour after being paired with O'Connor and Adam. Our noobs Jay and Pete Baker even got in on the act a few rounds in. While our opposition of 2 noobs and Adams Dad weighed down Fish and Luke significantly.

Which meant more ownage for me!

Only a few body shots registered all day (mostly I got capped in the head if I got hit at all) but that didn't stop me self-inflicting injury as I slid and dived for cover as the adrenalin started flowing. A huge lump appeared on my upper thigh by the end of the day, topped my an impressive bloody welt, decoratively surrounded by deep purple bruises. And today, although the swelling had subsided, I tore the top off it again slide tackling at soccer. Good times. :)

Two Evils

Who were you supporting in the World Cup Final?

After Italy's dodgy penalty against us (Australia) and then their heartbreaking (but deserved) defeat of the Germans, I was pretty anti-italy.

But Henry won himself no honour when falling against Portugal in the semi, and Zizou's moment of madness left me apathetic to the winner.

The football was of a good level, and the 2 goals made the contest interesting, and after about 60 minutes the game started to flow once the Italians stopped going to ground quite as much.

The German victory over Portugal was far more entertaining though, and in terms of skill, the French victory over Brazil was a feast. The most emotional games for me were of course our historic win over Japan and the ultra-dramatic draw against Croatia.

And the best match? For me it has to be Aus v Croatia. It was a live game, 4 goals (beginning in the 1st minute!), a late winner, 2 red cards - and it ebbed and flowed, although the skill level was rather low admittedly! Ghanas demolition of the Czech Republic I thought was very entertaining and a major upset too.

--------------------------------------------------------

Also caught some of Wimbledon while waiting for the football. Mauresmo was quite competent to claw back victory against Henin-Hardenne, although the Belgian seemed to lose the plot simultaneously as Mauresmo's quality increased, swinging easy balls every where but in.

Federer on the other hand was at his clinical, ruthless best in the first set against Nadal. Nadal came out fighting in the second set which made great viewing, but couldn't maintain his composure, first at 5-4 up and serving for the match, and then after achieving a mini-break in the tie-break, and Federer took full advantage as only he seems capable.

--------------------------------------------------------

Headed home early tomorrow morning. Better get out of here and find a present for Sabrina who has been housing me. What to get a girl who has everything? How about chocolate hehe. Also gotta go get my flight tickets from Auntie Debbie's (oh yeah). Got up late today cause my sleep was interrupted by the pain of teething! I gotta see the dentist when I get back now that both wisdom teeth in my lower jaw have decided to push through. At least I'm pretty much over my chest cold - small graces.

Bitter Gallas calls Italy 'cheats' - skysports article

France defender William Gallas has called the Italians 'cheats', after his team's World Cup final defeat to the Azzurri on Sunday.
Les Bleus captain Zinedine Zidane was correctly dismissed for a head-butt on Marco Materazzi in an off-the-ball incident in Berlin.
But a bitter Gallas has controversially moved to defend his team-mate and alleged that Marcello Lippi's team used underhand tactics to win.
"Italians always act like this," he told AFP. "It is a shame to say that, but when they feel they are being dominated they try to provoke you.
"Yes, they are cheaters, but we can't stop that. Fifa and the referees only see the second act, they never look at why there is an incident.
"I accept when the adversary wins with honour, but that is not the case. We know Zizou, he doesn't react like that, people can't react like that, but he has been insulted.
"I think it was very grave. When you play against people like that you want to kick their ass. It is cheating, but they are Italians."
While reports in the French media suggest that Materazzi called Zidane a 'terrorist,' making reference to his Algerian roots, the Frenchman's reaction was inexcusable and left a sour taste in the mouth after what has been an outstanding career.

2 Games, 3 Days, 24 Hours on the Flight Home

That's what is left.
I've slipped into vegetating for the remainder of my trip. Not enough soccer on, so it's back to sleeping in past midday and watching dvds in between meals ;)
Exciting eh?

Portugal v Germany - I think only the participants tend to care about the third place playoff. Germany is fielding a changed team, and Portugal quite possibly doesn't give a stuff anymore. Hopefully Klose will finish with a goal to guarantee top scorer (although it is probably already in the bag).

Italy (Booo) v Frankreich - No prizes for who I want to win. But I am rapidly losing interest in dour diving football and want to get back home and take my own team into finals.

Been staying in Munich with Kevin and Sabrina. Been at Sabrina's place which is a 2 room (1 bedroom) apartment in Goetheplatz in the city. Kevin lives in a 1 room apartment a little further out but still very central. But his place is miniscule, and his bed is about the size of a Kraft Single. That's not to say that Sabrina's place is large - but it is made comfortable by cute space saving devices such as the mini dishwasher and clotheswasher. Her place is well styled, she is well groomed. Kevin speaks like a german who might have watched too many country westerns - laid back springs to mind ;).

Oh yeah

Oh yeah. I passed all my courses. I rock.
  • Credit in Human Rights after not attending for weeks and missing my first major assessment, but the teacher loved me and my opinionated outbursts so much he swung me another time to do it. Score.
  • Credit in Insurance which I though was pretty impressive given there were no lecture tapes for the several weeks I missed and I didn't know he was sending out stuff to people until only a few weeks were left (and he sent me crap all).
  • Distinction in Bankruptcy which was expected after I nailed the mid-sem, oh yeah.
  • Pass in Australian Economy by far the easist and most mind-numbing of all my courses. I not only didn't attend lectures after the first week, I missed the mid-semester exam, and 3 of 5 examinable tutorials. Fo real.
Looks like I'll be needing a job and stuff now.

GAWD! Just looked at my bank account! Holy crap Euro's are gay! And I need to pay back Mike still for 2 strips we bought on his card OMG!

Relaxing in Gibblestadt

Relaxing in Gibblestadt atm. had a great feed yesterday but only after travelling for ages to get it. We ventured to Ruhrglen (not the correct name, not even close) about 3 hours drive from here for a yearly school reunion of my uncle Peter's classmates and friends. They put on a fantastic spread of German foods which was great. I shoudln't have had any of the wine though (which was great) cause I was pretty dehydrated already and left with a decent headache when we eventually left at about midnight.

Caught most of the first half of England v Portugal at Peter's brothers house - he seemed a very disgruntled German, and then most of the second half at the party (I missed Rooney's stamp!). I picked both fixtures correctly - woot! I bet VJ didn't put his money where his mouth was about France :P And it's too bad Mike has gone home, cause I have been waiting for England to fall down after their utterly lousy group games. Admittedly the Ecuador Round of 16 game made more sense after seeing England v Portugal, it seems Ecuador was a training run for that game, which was going well untill Rooney lost the plot. I wonder if he will return home to universal disgust like Beckham did in 98? Perhaps not, since I don't expect Sven would be as senseless as Keegan and blame Rooney solely for England's exit. Still, Rooney is an ugly and rather senseless fellow - barely a glimmer of the player that almost set Euro 2004 alight, and it might be a harder road for him to regain public sympathy without Beckham's star power.

France on the other hand was very impressive and seem suited against 'big' teams by out playing them with skill, and remaining structuraly solid and determined in defence. I think by this method they will overcome Portugal enroute to the final but be unable to cope with both the hostile German crowd, and the exuberant play of the Germans - who you might note are the least skilful team remaining in terms of players! That of course assumes Germany will get past the 11 Italians who will spend half the time on the ground. I didn't watch Italy defeat Ukraine but that can hardly be an indicator of form and Germany will be a very different proposition - likewise though, it would be unlikely that Germany will score many unless have yet another man sent off.

Alas the Germans aren't as passionate as I have come to expect from the Australians. The World Cup is less exciting by a long distance now that we are out :(

Not so much to do when there is no football! Went to kick a ball about with Theodore and his mates this afternoon at the local pitch which although unmown was pretty cool. A small beach volleyball court with net, a large football pitch, with shot net at one end, 2 fixed fullsize goals at either end and 2 light weight moveable 3/4 size aluminium goals with nets. I managed to clear the shot net alas with one wayward free kick.

While in Berlin on our non-football days we (Mike and I) visited the Berlin Fan-Fest, the Football Globe, the Reichstag (German Parliament) and Pele Station.

The Berlin Fan-Fest was quite huge - but being a non-match day, largely empty. It can hold over a million it appears! As was the case the day we left for Germany v Argentina.
The Football Globe was something I had heard about preiously and quite keen to visit Berlin for. Fortunately it was free the day we visited as despite being incredibly imaginative, was not very entertaining. In side was a small merchandise kiosk (of course!) and the main room held various interactive displays broadcast on the roof- however the content was limited. A movie projetion IMAX style would have been infinetely more entertaining, alas.
The Reichstag was annoying to enter. One of the lifts was initially out of order it seemed, so there was both a wait to get in as you waited in line, then went through security, then waited for the lift! And when you left, waiting for the lift down, and then would you believe, a second lift down to the side exit. The rooftop was nice for the archetecture and views, but nothing else. I couldn't see into the Parliament room below as I was led to believe, possibly because it wasn't a sitting day.
Pele Station was a cool exhibit. It was located in a large area inside the Potzdamer Platz train station which was curious to begin with. The visit Rio kiosk inside was expected but not the marketing stall of the company that handles Pele's image which greeted us next and I feared it would be a huge marketing exercise (which it was, but not in a bad way in the end...). Then there was a small video of Pele gaining glory in his first World Cup (Sweden) before we really got in the mood... with Football in the Dark! In a small, indoor football sized room iluminated only by ultraviolet flourecent lights along the sidelines, ceiling and goalposts, you could play football wearing fluoro vests and with an inflated, internally lit, colour changing ball! It was just me and mike taking shots, till 2 others joined us. Would have been way cool with a few more people (we went late at night and were virtually the only ones there) but also an injury risk, as you could see the ball, other player's chests, but not violently swinging legs! The exhibit also had a cool projected game of Pele Pong Fussball and would show a different Pele goal each time someone scored. Also there were numerous short (3 mins) films about different things Pele had done, and several cool Pele items including many trophies featuring his unique Replica of the Jules Rimet Trophy (predecessor of the world cup), and his 3 world cup winner medals! There was also a massive wide Virtual Pitch and Stadium projection which was supposed to show Pele playing against Pele! But it was switched off or something. After such an awesomeness onslaught to the senses, I was forced to spend many a Euro in the Pele store at the exit!

That was about it for Berlin. We visited a few other things here and there. The Olympic Stadium where the final will be, except that we couldn't get in! A broadcasting arena in Potzdamer place which would have been cool to attend on a match day. Other than that, we went shopping, and among the various football paraphenalia me and mike are bringing back to all you lot, I scored a half-price Australia shirt and a half-price Netherlands shirt! Which I promplty made expensive by adding text and numbers too! Still I was a happy chappy. The Adidas store was cool but crowded, and discountless. The Nikestore called NikeTown was aesthetically very sexy (you can do a lot more when you don't limit yourself to black and white) and I picked up some cool bits and pieces in addition to lettering for my Niederlander strip (v.Persie!)

Next. Will probably spend just another day here with the relos. It's quite nice so it will be a shame to leave. My cousins are both very friendly as are their parents but Football calls. So off to Munich for Deutschland's next encounter in the Semis and to see the remaining cousins Kevin and Sabrina.

Pic and Mov Update

Some good times, some not so good. Well, actually I didn't take any pics of the not so good. More of a fill-in-the-blanks kind of thing if you feel the need.

A few pics below of this and that, starting from the game in Stuttgart v Croatia, to the fixture in Kaiserslauten(K-Town), to our retreat to Berlin after Grosso's fall... and then onto Frankfurt where Mike departed home.

Also a couple from Gibblestadt with family and will eventually load up a few from Wurzburg (but not until after I come home I expect, gone through 60% of the July quota now).

There are more pics on my Flickr account so check it out.

note: turns out I have been spelling Gibbelstadt incorrectly. Whatevaa :P
note: ughh... retaaard.. its Giebelstadt!

Frankfurt Fan-Fest - Giant Screen

The Fan-fest was full! So I had to watch from behind railings near a bridge over the river. I had to stand from when I found the spot (30 mins prior kickoff) until the end of penalties (almost 3 hours!) so I wouldn't lose my position.
The German fans failed to excite me though (admitedly they were pretty anxious after conceding), so next time I will be sitting down.

Pic was taken only half way along. they squeezed in 700,000, and later a million for Germany v Argentina on the day we left Berlin. Standing room only!

I was rather shocked to see James Beattie (of Everton FC) come out of one of the scummy plastic public toilets and regathered myself to snap a quick pic as he disappeared back into the crowd. Asking Mike if it was Beatts was kinda pointless and lost me 1 second I could have used to take a better pic. He was pretty built so I reckon it was him.
